Vocal jazz group 'Take Eight' from Mierlo is formed by eight singers (four ladies and four gentlemen), hence the name, is accompanied by a combo with piano/guitar/bass guitar and drums, and is led by Ruud van Vlerken. The group is unique in the region for its choice of repertoire.
This repertoire includes fine arrangements by the world's most purified vocal groups: Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices. How High the Moon/ Desafinado/ Charleston Alley/ Corner Pocket comes directly from the traditional jazz repertoire. From the contemporary repertoire, the playlist includes, for example, Painted on Canvas (Gregory Porter) and Sinking soon (Norah Jones). In addition, songs by Paul Simon (One man's ceiling) and Stevie Wonder (I wish) are also brought with a jazzy sauce. Tasty swinging up-tempo songs with exciting guidance from the band alternate with beautiful slow a capella songs.
With this repertoire, "Take Eight" is unique in this region. "We try to keep the sound intimate, making the beautiful harmonies even better". Ruud is very enthusiastic about the total group. "All of them can stand their male/female soloally". Because of the many solo changes, the variety in style and tempo, the quality, experience and enjoyment of the group itself, and especially because the combo complements the whole with fine solo work, a performance for anyone who loves polyphonic vocal jazz is a pleasure to experience.
Jazzy vocal groep met combo
Vocal jazz group ‘Take Eight’ uit Mierlo wordt gevormd door acht zangers (vier dames en vier heren), vandaar ook de naam, wordt begeleid door een combo met piano/gitaar/basgitaar en drums, en staat onder leiding van Ruud van Vlerken. De groep is in de regio uniek vanwege haar repertoirekeuze.
Dit repertoire bestaat o.a. uit fraaie arrangementen van de meest gelouterde vocal groepen van de wereld: Manhattan Transfer en New York Voices. How high the moon/ Desafinado/ Charleston Alley/ Corner pocket komen rechtstreeks uit het traditionele jazz repertoire. Uit het hedendaagse repertoire staan op de playlist bijvoorbeeld Painted on Canvas (Gregory Porter) en Sinking soon (Norah Jones). Daarnaast worden ook songs van Paul Simon (One man’s ceiling) en Stevie Wonder (I wish) met een jazzy sausje gebracht. Lekkere swingende up-tempo nummers met opzwepende begeleiding van de band wisselen af met mooie langzame a capella songs.
Met dit repertoire is ‘Take Eight’ een unicum in deze regio. “We proberen de sound intiem te houden, waardoor de mooie harmonieën er nog beter uitkomen”. Ruud is heel enthousiast over de totale groep. “Stuk voor stuk kunnen ze solistisch hun mannetje/vrouwtje staan”. Door de vele solo wisselingen, de afwisseling in stijl en tempo, de kwaliteit, de beleving en plezier van de groep zelf, en zeker ook omdat het combo het geheel met fraai solowerk aanvult, is een optreden voor iedereen die houdt van meerstemmige vocale jazz een genot om mee te maken.
